The Fly 2022 player selection process

As The Fly 2022 edges closer and players begin to be announced for this year’s competition, here’s a bit of an insight into the player selection process for this year’s edition of the tournament.

The process for selecting players for the second edition of The Fly will see some changes from last year’s competition and will see a mix of player retention, a player draft, and selection panel placement to complete the make-up of the 2022 squads.

  1. Retained Players

After reviewing the numbers of returning player applications, each men’s team will contain one retained/returning player from the 2021 competition while each women’s team will contain three retained/returning players from the 2021 competition. These retained players will help maintain the team identities from the first year of competition.

  2. Player Draft

The next five men’s players and three women’s players per team will be selected by the team Head Coaches through a draft system, selecting players from the open player pool that has been put together by the selection panel following the player application stage.

This will allow coaches autonomy to build their starting line up to suit their coaching philosophies and put together their ‘starting six’.

The draft is due to take place in February, and we’re looking forward to the first ever draft for The Fly and all the excitement that will come with it!

  3. Placed Players

Following the open draft, the remaining six men’s and women’s players per squad will be placed by the player selection panel.

This element of player allocation will promote the development aspect of The Fly, challenging coaches and players to develop and excel with a range of different players and give opportunities to up-and-coming players that may be less well-known by coaches.

We’ll be making the league’s first player announcements very soon as we unveil the retained players for 2022 and we look forward to seeing how the teams shape up and come to life ahead of this Summer, so stayed tuned!
