The Fly draft - New women’s players to watch
The first selections for the Women’s draft for The Fly 2024 will be revealed on Thursday 1 February with the four teams selecting eleven players each to complete their 15-player rosters for this year’s competition.
Here we take a look at some of the new names to look out for in 2024 who could be big picks ahead of their debut season at The Fly.
(The full Women’s draft player pool is detailed at the bottom of this preview)
Georgie Southorn - A powerful, pacy player with a dead eye for goal, Southorn will finally show off her flair for the game at The Fly in 2024 as she looks to make her mark in Sixes, following her inclusion in the British Lacrosse Training Squad and the team that won the Hong Kong Super Sixes in December.
She played for England at U19 World Championship in 2019 and impressed, being fast-tracked into the senior setup following the tournament, making the 2022 Senior World Championship squad, claiming a bronze medal, and finishing as England’s third highest point scorer with 17.
A sure-fire pick for any team looking to increase their firepower, who knows how long she will last before being snapped up.
Charlie Wilson - Another graduate of the 2019 Under 19 England squad, Wilson did wonderfully well in forcing her way into the squad at the 2022 Worlds, and repaying that selection by being part of a defensive unit that received huge plaudits during the tournament in finishing in 3rd place.
A more defensively minded player, but still someone who can push the ball swiftly on transition, it will be interesting to see how her style adapts to Sixes, but still surely a classy player who will be a no-brainer pick for a Head Coach.
Miho Sakurai – Sakurai looks set to bring an international flavour to the draft, and could be a smart bet to really bring The Fly to life in 2024.
The Japanese leftie international attacker, now plying her trade in England, was top scorer and constant threat at the recent Winter Box League (19 points, 14G, 5A) and is playing club lacrosse at Women’s National Champions, Blues.
Part of the Japan side that finished 5th at the 2022 World Championship tallying 15 points (11G, 4A) she could well prove hot property come draft time with coaches looking to take advantage of that high-level experience.
Jenni Aiton – A hugely experienced Scotland international with over 50 caps for her country, Aiton was Scotland’s top scorer at the last two Field World Championships.
The left-handed attacker has also become equally adept on the Sixes field, representing British Lacrosse at the 2022 World Games and offers a level of lacrosse IQ and leadership that will prove an asset to any team who secures her services in the draft.
