The Fly draft - 5 returning women to watch
The first selections for the Women’s draft for The Fly 2024 will be revealed on Thursday 1 February with the four teams selecting eleven players each to complete their 15-player rosters for this year’s competition.
Here we take a look at some of the returning names to the competition who have already made their marks in previous editions of The Fly and are up for grabs in the 2024 draft.
Anna Neville – Anna Neville in the blue of Swift had become an almost synonymous, permanent fixture at The Fly, but after three years there’s now potential we may see her facing up against her former team as she enters this year’s draft.
The recent Exeter University graduate recorded 16 points (4th highest overall) last year in helping Swift to The Fly final and is very much someone who has seen their rise in the sport tied to the Sixes game as they suit a fast-paced, all-action style of game.
Laura Beaman – Another stalwart of The Fly, after three years of service at the heart of the Hustle team, Laura Beaman’s talents are up for grabs across all our teams as a part of the 2024 draft.
The midfielder has played a key role in club side Blues’ rise to National and European champion status as well as picking up a first Senior England cap and goal in 2022 against Puerto Rico.
A natural leader on the field and few players boast more Sixes experience, a sure-fire early draft pick for a team in search of an all-round talent.
Katie Greenwood – It’s felt so long since we’ve seen Katie Greenwood at The Fly it’s almost like a new player entering the competition, but she’s actually a champion of The Fly, winning the title and Best goalie award in the inaugural 2021 season.
Since then she has added a Field World Championship bronze medal to her honours list as well as Sixes World Games representation and stepped into the box game all alongside becoming a recent new mother.
Whoever is able to pick up the England and British Lacrosse shot stopper will be adding a key player to their roster.
Sofia Wise – It shows the strength and depth of The Fly this year that Sofia Wise is available in the draft after reigning champions Forge made their retained player selections.
A two-time champion with Forge, the 20-year-old is a hugely skilful and pacy attack minded player and has 20 goals across the last two editions of the competition while having also made her England senior field debut and being a part of the British Lacrosse Sixes training squad.
In a competitive draft field, Wise may be one of the first names on the coaches’ wish lists.
Julie Wise – Another Wise that will definitely be featuring high up in draft selection thoughts will be Julie Wise, who is available in the draft after two years at Hustle.
Wise’s game has flourished in the Sixes format, twice being named in the Fly all-star team and racking up 31 goals in the process, placing her third in the women’s all-time scoring charts.
However, she is yet to pick up the winner’s trophy and she may well be hoping to find her right match this year as much as any of the teams to finally unlock that winning potential and put the England and British Lacrosse international on the top of the podium.
