The Fly Round 2 21st May 2023
The potential for fireworks in the last push for the semi-finals!
Both sides will have already played earlier in the day and should know exactly what they need to do to secure their best possible seeding for the semis.
Mike Molster’s Rise squad showed a strong defensive edge on the opening day, while Swift’s attack shone with Lottie Robertson scoring seven in their opening game and this battle of attack and defence could prove the deciding factor.
Who will finish the men’s pool play on a high?
Forge’s Conor Dockery and Swift’s Ravi K. Sitlani are two of The Fly’s most experienced coaches and will both be out to give their team the advantage going into the semi-finals with a win in their final pool match.
Both teams missed out on the final last year and a win here would give either side the momentum to rectify that at Finals Day.
Both teams in need of a win, but who will get it?
Last year’s winners Forge had a difficult start to their 2023 campaign with defeats to Rise and Hustle, but their late comeback in the loss to Hustle showed what this talented side are capable of, and a positive reaction will be expected.
Swift are in a similar position, also losing an absolute thriller to Hustle despite their titanic fightback in the final quarter and will equally be looking to make moves on Sunday with two games to potentially propel them up the seedings and an attack with the firepower capable of turning their fortunes around.
The battle of the two unbeaten sides - someone’s record must go!
Hustle come in to the game off the back of two dramatic one-goal victories and looking to seal the #1 seed for Finals Day, while Rise’s impressive six-goal win against last year’s champions Forge has drawn the attention as they look to go better than their two consecutive 3rd place finishes in 2021 & 22.
Can anyone stop the rise and rise of Rise Men?
Rise are looking to round off another perfect pool play campaign following their two victories last Sunday and confirm themselves as the #1 seed for the semi-finals.
Forge will be disappointed to have lost their opening fixture from a commanding position last week and will surely be out to prove a point; what better way than a win against the unbeaten, reigning champs to kick start things?
Another stunner to begin Week 2, and the first overtime game of 2023 going the way of Hustle courtesy of Dan Flisk’s game-winner!
Swift led for almost all of the game, and even in the 4th quarter still held a four-goal advantage, but as in Week 1, Hustle made a late charge victory, first tying the game up to force the added period, with both teams missing chances to win the contest before Flisk’s golden goal winner.
The Fly Round 1 14th May 2023
Rise Men once again reaffirmed their position as the team to beat, collecting their second win of the day and starting strong in search of that third consecutive title.
On a high from their comeback win earlier in the day, Hustle largely kept pace with Rise until the third quarter as their opponents hit a hot scoring streak and closed out well despite having their starting goalie sent off, playing a large period of the last quarter man-down.
Hustle Women avenged their defeat in last year’s final in another absolute cracker of a contest to close out the women’s action on Day 1!
Hustle raced into an early lead and kept themselves ahead for a long while, before Forge finally started to fire and their strong attacking options combined with Emilie Chandler in goal came back like a train to lead 14-13 with a minute to play - however, Hustle came back and Julie Wise produced one of the moments of the day to win it in the last second and give her side two wins out of two for the day!
Reigning champions Rise Men got their The Fly 2023 campaign off to the perfect start; with their new-look keeping the Rise legacy going, led by Drew Bickerton’s four goals.
While Rise maintained a healthy advantage throughout, Swift stayed in touch and weren’t too far behind, giving hope for their double header next week.
Another thriller of a match to kick off the 2023 men’s competition!
Forge looked to have things wrapped up, leading by 6 goals midway through the 3rd quarter; but Hustle produced a sensational late rally and with the scores tied, Dave Groves sinked a buzzer beater to complete the comeback and get the opening game win!
Rise claim a big statement win to begin 2023, beating the reigning champions Forge!
New Rise Head Coach masterminds an opening game win for his side, starting with a strong defensive base before unleashing his attacking charges to pull away in the second half.
Hustle and Swift give life to this year’s competition as The Fly 2023 curtain raiser!
