The Fly draft 5 to watch - Women
The selections for the Women’s draft for The Fly 2023 will be revealed on Wednesday 1 March with the four teams selecting six players to add to their rosters for this year’s competition.
We take a look at some of the key names to look out for who could be big picks for this year.
(The full Women’s draft player pool is detailed at the bottom of this preview)
Anna Saunter – A two-way midfield dynamo, Saunter’s game is very much suited to Sixes as an accurate shooter to go with a solid defensive game that will surely see her well sought after in the draft.
After two seasons on the squad at Forge Women, including last year’s Championship winning season, Saunter is up for grabs across all four teams, so expect a fight to secure her services early in the draft.
Chloe Chan – A tenacious defender with added speed and skill, Chan is a two-time World Championship medal winner with England and transferred her talents to the Sixes game by representing Great Britain at the 2022 World Games.
2023 would be Chan’s first year playing at The Fly, and any team that make their move for the 29 year-old will surely be adding a leader and proven winner to their roster.
Sienna Parekh – A young goalkeeper who makes their presence felt on the field, Parekh was picked #2 overall in the 2022 draft, going to Rise Women, however had to pull out of the competition through injury.
The University of Nottingham student may well be an in-demand pick again this year with two teams still without a goalkeeper, such a key position particularly in the Sixes game.
Chess Gray – A proven goalscorer, Gray is a Scotland international with significant Sixes experience, playing for Great Britain at the 2022 World Games and Scotland at the EuroLax Sixes.
Gray first appeared at The Fly in 2021 for Hustle, and was set to return to the team before an injury ruled her out of action – will she make another return to the purple of Hustle, or will another team swoop for the creative attacker.
Liv Thomas – Another player built for Sixes Lacrosse, Thomas is a midfielder with a huge engine that puts in a shift at both ends of the field and is a standout name in the draft player pool.
A bronze medal winner with England at the 2022 World Championship, just three years after graduating up from the U20 squad, Thomas is one of the most exciting young players in the sport and looks set to make her debut at The Fly in 2023.
